Four Tricks to Overcoming Depression that Work

These four tricks for overcoming depression are what work for me.  They can help to get rid of depression, and keep it from coming back.  We are physical, mental, social, and spiritual beings.  These four tricks to overcoming depression cover each of these four parts of our being.  They are as follows:
  • Physical - Exercise helps to produce endorphin that help to fight against depression.  I recommend daily exercise.  Walk at least 50 feet and work up to a longer distance as your body adjusts.  This will help you feel better and have a clearer mind.
  • Mental - Being thankful helps to fight against depression.  Daily, practice thinking on what you are thankful for, even in the worse situations.
  • Social - Help someone who is worse off than yourself.  Practicing this regularly will help to get your mind off of yourself, which can be a big cause for depression.  For example, reach out and be friendly to someone who is very shy or insecure.
  • Spiritual - Seek divine help daily.  This will depend on your belief.  For me, my divine help comes from praying and reading the Bible.  The Bible is full of many promises that are encouraging.
Now, depression is not an easy thing to overcome.  It is a process of changing one's habits and ways of thinking, which can take time.  And so I encourage you to get help with fighting off depression if you need it.  However, developing these four strategies (tricks) are a good starting point.

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind," Romans 12:2.
